Started in 1924 by founder Joseph Nigg with two white horses and a carriage, Austrian busing company NIGGBUS is as environmentally friendly as a company that now works with diesel buses can be.

Having transported over 6 million people in their close to 100 years of operation, NIGGBUS now has over 20 full size buses and has been the first to implement a variety of eco-friendly technologies in their vehicles.  Things like being the first bus company in Austria to test biodiesel fuel back in 1997 and sulfur free fuel in 1999.

However, the company also saw that it made sense that if they burned less fuel, it would not only reduce carbon emissions, but cost them less money.

In 2000 they implemented their first Ecodriving training to help change driver behavior to be more efficient with the fuel used when driving.

They had some good success with a 5% increase in fuel mileage for that year.  They then backed that up with a 7% increase from their baseline in 2001.  With an eye toward sustainability, they even went and retrained all their drivers in Ecodriving technique in 2005.

Clearly, NIGGBUS thought that the process of Ecodriving was worth the expense and the time to implement. And the numbers seem to prove it.

So what is Ecodriving?

In a nutshell, it is a series of common sense approaches to driving that allows fleet managers to change the behavior of their drivers.  The techniques help drivers to increase their safety, decrease their carbon footprint and use of consumables like brakes and tires, and make a tank of fuel last a lot longer.

Techniques like –

  • Reduced idling time
  • Proper shifting
  • Linear and smooth use of throttle and brake

Ecodriving is a fuel savings solution for NIGGBUS – is it something that can work for you?
