One of the major concepts, on which the theory and practice of Ecodriving is based, is anticipation; looking down the road and trying to get a good idea of what is about to happen in the next few seconds.
By doing this, a good Ecodriver can avoid having to be reactionary and can reduce the chance of making bad lane choices or being forced into having to brake or accelerate aggressively. They can be a smoother driver, and generally, the smoother and more relaxed the driver is, the better the fuel economy and the safer the driving experience is likely to be.
In effect, the anticipatory driver will come up to the same traffic situation as anyone else, but because they are thinking and looking ahead, they will be better able to handle the situation from a fuel savings, carbon footprint and safety standpoint.
Anticipation for managing fleet fuel savings isn’t just for the person behind the wheel though, it is just as pertinent to the person behind the desk; the manager running the fleet.
What can anticipation do for a manager?
It can let them see problems that could potentially affect the fleet as a whole coming early and let them make less drastic, more educated, and better decisions on how to tackle those problems. Anticipation can allow a manager to be more efficient in their decision making, and allow them to save their department and the entire company money in the long run.
A great example of how anticipation can help a fleet manager to be ready for potential problems can be taken from the current state of affairs around the Straits of Hormuz and how it may affect fuel prices.
Roughly 40% of the oil traded worldwide is imported through the narrow strait that separates the Persian Gulf from the Gulf of Oman along the Iranian border.
It does not take a clairvoyant to realize that any threat to free movement of commerce through that area will affect the price of oil globally. It also does not take a mystic and a crystal ball to surmise that eventually such a thing might take place, and in fact, that is exactly what has happened.
What does that information mean to someone from an anticipatory standpoint.
Well, fleet managers across the country, and indeed across the world are most likely currently antipating that prices at the pump are going to increase – maybe by quite a bit.
Chances are, they are correct.
The next question is, what can those fleet managers do with that well figured anticipatory hunch?
They can research now what to do to help their fleets to become more fuel efficient before prices really start to skyrocket.
They can research things like purchasing more fuel efficient vehicles now before prices spike on those vehicles as demand increases after fuel prices have hit something scary like… $5, $6, or $7 per gallon in the U.S.!
They could look into fuel efficient add-ons to their vehicles like aerodynamic devices, more fuel efficient tires, GPS systems and the like. They could be doing this now so that they give their fleet operations depots time to learn about and install the equipment before that surge in the price of fuel hits.
